Classrooms
Dirt Learning at Green’s Learning Academy is designed to provide young children the best possible learning environment. We have two classrooms: an indoor classroom and an outdoor classroom. The classrooms are designed to be developmentally appropriate for children ages 3-5. Materials used in the classrooms are open-ended and encourage imaginative play and cooperative learning.
Ms. Christi has a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood and Special Education. I understand and believe that children of all ages have different developmental abilities and needs. Therefore, I strive to help them succeed through these ages and stages by providing individualized developmentally appropriate activities. Your children will learn through play-based, nature-enhanced activities and follow Utah State Board of Education Early Learning Standards.
Many of these experiences take place outdoors within the child’s interactions with nature.
Nature-based activities happen everywhere! Indoors, outdoors, in large groups and small, individual activities at our preschool and other venues, planned and unplanned teacher-directed and child-initiated activities, and the best – SPONTANEOUS learning experience.
“Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold” –Joseph Chilton Pearce
Risk vs. Hazard
Your Child’s safety is of our most significant concern. With that said, we do believe that risk play is beneficial in a child’s development. Risky play in early childhood can help develop a child’s self-confidence, resilience, executive functioning abilities, and even risk-management skills.
Risk is a challenge or uncertainty that a child can recognize in their environment and determine whether to engage with it or not.
Hazard is a danger in the environment beyond your child’s understanding and can result in severe injury or endangerment.
Hazard play is not allowed, and my staff will be ready and watching for any hazards and will be prepared to redirect to safer play.
Play is the training for the unexpected” –Marc Behoff
Play can be emotionally messy. Children are allowed to explore their emotions. Play involves opportunities for children to fail, struggle, experience disappointment, be patient, and do all sorts of emotionally messy things. Children need to know all emotions are ok and they need to learn how to manage life’s less-than-perfect moments in socially acceptable ways. Executive functioning involves decision-making, impulse control, switching between tasks, planning, and using information. Executive functioning is an indicator of school readiness.
